Giant Tiger
Improving fleet productivity, driver accountability, and compliance across a large private fleet
Giant Tiger operates more than 260 retail locations across Canada and relies on its private trucking division, Tiger Trucking, to move products across Ontario, Quebec, the Maritimes, and cross-border routes. With a fleet of 811 vehicles, the company needed better visibility into driver behaviour, idle time, equipment activity, and regulatory compliance. By bringing these areas together through telematics, driver coaching, and automated reporting, Giant Tiger improved day-to-day efficiency while giving fleet managers more objective information to support safety and accountability.

The Challenge: Gaining Visibility Across a Large Private Fleet
As Tiger Trucking grew to more than 800 vehicles operating across multiple jurisdictions, managing performance consistently became increasingly difficult.
Fleet managers had limited visibility into driver behaviour, idle time, equipment availability, maintenance schedules, and compliance information. Without a consistent way to measure performance across the operation, it was harder to identify where improvements were needed and respond quickly to emerging issues.
Multi-province operations also created an administrative challenge. Mileage, fuel tax reporting, and vehicle safety information had to be managed across Ontario, Quebec, the Maritimes, and cross-border routes, creating the potential for disconnected records and manual processes.
The Solution: Using Fleet Data to Improve Daily Operations
Giant Tiger introduced a more connected approach to fleet management, using telematics data to monitor vehicle activity, driver behaviour, maintenance information, and compliance requirements.
Driver performance reports gave fleet managers a clearer basis for coaching. Rather than relying on subjective observations, managers could review documented driving events, identify patterns, and use that information in conversations with individual drivers.
Idle-time monitoring was paired with driver coaching to address unnecessary fuel consumption and reduce associated emissions. The company also used electronic weigh station pre-clearance to help eligible vehicles bypass weigh stations when authorized, reducing unnecessary stops during deliveries.
Centralized mileage, fuel tax, and vehicle safety information also simplified compliance management across multiple provinces and jurisdictions, reducing the need to gather information manually from separate sources.
The Results: Faster Fleet Movement and Greater Accountability
The changes produced measurable improvements in both highway efficiency and regulatory interactions.
Giant Tiger achieved a 98% weigh station bypass rate, while monthly bypasses doubled. The company also saw a 6% reduction in roadside inspection requests from regulatory authorities. These results helped reduce delivery interruptions and allowed more drivers to remain on the move.
Idle-time monitoring combined with driver coaching also reduced fuel waste and fleet-wide carbon emissions, although the case study does not provide a specific percentage reduction for either outcome.
The emphasis on measurable driver performance also helped strengthen accountability throughout the operation. Fleet managers gained a consistent basis for reviewing driving behaviour and coaching employees, while drivers had clearer performance standards to work toward.
In 2024, Tiger Trucking was recognized with the Fleet Safety Award in the Large Fleet Class by the Private Motor Truck Council of Canada.
For Giant Tiger, GPS tracking and telematics became a practical tool for managing a complex private fleet. By combining driver performance data, idle monitoring, compliance information, and operational reporting, the company improved visibility across its transportation operation while supporting safer and more efficient fleet management.
