Mistik Management

Improving logging fleet visibility, compliance, safety, and operational accuracy

Mistik Management Ltd. is a Saskatchewan-based forest management company operating a fleet of 189 logging trucks. With trucks hauling logs to three local mills and operating across remote areas, Mistik needed a more efficient way to monitor vehicle speed, payload-related requirements, travel activity, and driver behaviour. By bringing multiple companies and contractors into a shared fleet tracking system, Mistik gained more accurate operational data, improved compliance monitoring, and greater visibility into its logging operations.

The Challenge: Managing a Complex Logging Operation

Mistik Management’s logging operation involved multiple companies, mills, and contractors sharing the same network of trucks. Many of the trucks hauled logs to all three mills, making it important to have consistent information about where vehicles were travelling and how they were being operated.

The company also faced regulatory requirements under Saskatchewan’s Roads and Transportation Partnership (RTA). RTA holders are required to monitor logging trucks for factors such as speed and payload while logs are being transported to mill facilities.

Mistik’s previous tracking technology made this process difficult and time-consuming. Gathering accurate fleet information required more effort, while the company lacked an efficient way to sort and analyze the data needed to manage its operations.

The Solution: Unifying Fleet Tracking Across Three Mills

Mistik worked with the third mill to equip vehicles operating under the RTA with telematics. Rather than maintaining separate tracking systems, the companies shared a common fleet database, creating a more coordinated approach to monitoring the logging operation.

Each company could create customized reports focused on its own trucks while still sharing the broader tracking infrastructure. Reports provided real-time information about vehicle locations, speeds, travel activity, and driver behaviour.

The shared approach also created financial efficiencies for Mistik and its contractors. Because the companies shared the cost of the tracking devices, each truck needed only one GPS device to support hauling operations across all three mills.

The system also provided coverage in remote areas where cellular service could be limited. Satellite-based information allowed Mistik to maintain visibility into vehicles operating in areas with sparse cell phone coverage, which was particularly important for a fleet working throughout forested and remote locations.

The Results: Greater Accuracy for Compliance and Fleet Management

With telematics in place, Mistik gained faster access to precise information about its logging operation. The company could monitor speeding, missed load-check stops, locations of operations, fuel consumption, and driver habits, providing a clearer picture of how its trucks were being used.

The improved data helped Mistik fulfill its obligations to the Saskatchewan Ministry of Highways while also providing more accurate information about its log-haul operation. Reported haul distance and travel time could be used to calculate more accurate haul rates, giving the company better information for managing transportation costs.

The system also strengthened safety and incident management. Mistik could monitor vehicles in remote locations and use available vehicle information to conduct more accurate accident investigations. The company could also use tracking information when responding to public complaints about its vehicles.

The shared tracking system ultimately gave Mistik and its partners greater control over a complex multi-mill operation. By replacing a difficult and time-consuming tracking process with centralized fleet information and customizable reporting, the company could spend more time managing its operations and supporting the sustainability of the forest.
