Cardinal Couriers
Improving operational visibility, reducing downtime, and supporting more reliable deliveries
Cardinal Couriers provides business-to-business delivery services before 8 a.m. across Ontario and Quebec. With approximately 135 Class 5 and Class 8 vehicles operating from hubs between London, Ontario and Rivière-du-Loup, Quebec, the company needed better visibility into overnight operations, driver activity, and vehicle condition. By using telematics and maintenance insights together, Cardinal Couriers gained a clearer view of its fleet while giving managers better information to respond to delays, maintenance issues, and on-road incidents.

The Challenge: Improving Visibility Across Overnight Deliveries
Because Cardinal Couriers’ vehicles operate heavily overnight to support early-morning deliveries, managers needed to know where trucks were and whether they were on schedule. A vehicle could be delayed by a breakdown, a delivery, or another issue on the route, but there was limited visibility into what was happening in real time.
The company also wanted to reduce the disruption caused by vehicle downtime. Taking a truck off the road for maintenance meant operating with one fewer vehicle or arranging a replacement, creating additional costs and making it more difficult to maintain reliable service.
At the same time, Cardinal wanted its new fleet technology to be straightforward for both administrators and drivers to use. With a diverse and experienced driving workforce, ease of adoption was an important consideration in the rollout.
The Solution: Connecting Vehicle Visibility With Maintenance Insights
Cardinal Couriers organised its fleet across 10 regional terminals in Southern Ontario and Quebec and introduced telematics across its vehicles. Terminal managers could view vehicle locations, receive maintenance reminders, review driver vehicle inspection reports, and access information following collisions. Real-time alerts and data could also be integrated into the company’s business intelligence processes.
Electronic logs helped streamline driver and vehicle administration, while automated reporting gave managers a more consistent way to monitor fleet activity. Rather than depending on manual checks alone, management could review information as events occurred and respond accordingly.
Maintenance monitoring added another layer of visibility. Alerts could identify developing battery and starter problems in advance and help managers distinguish between minor, major, and critical vehicle faults. This allowed Cardinal to decide when a vehicle genuinely needed to come off the road instead of automatically sending it for service whenever a warning appeared.
The Results: Less Administrative Work and More Confident Fleet Decisions
The transition to electronic logs produced a significant improvement in Cardinal Couriers’ day-to-day operations. Time that had previously been spent auditing logs could be redirected toward core business activities.
Greater access to vehicle information also helped managers respond more effectively to incidents. In one collision, fleet leadership was able to review vehicle data and reconstruct what had happened before police arrived. The information helped establish how the collision occurred and reduced the uncertainty involved in the subsequent legal process, which the company said saved time and legal costs.
The company also used daily idle reporting to identify inefficient fuel use and follow up directly with drivers when necessary. This gave management a simple, repeatable way to address excessive idling and support fuel-efficiency efforts.
Maintenance insights helped Cardinal address developing problems before they caused unexpected downtime. The company reported receiving warnings of battery failures upwards of seven days in advance and identifying potential starter failures about a week ahead of time. It also used fault-severity information to determine whether a vehicle could safely complete its route before being scheduled for service, helping avoid unnecessary trips to the mechanic and keeping deliveries moving.
For Cardinal Couriers, GPS tracking and telematics became a practical way to bring more visibility to overnight operations. With better information about vehicle location, driver activity, incidents, and maintenance needs, the company was able to spend less time on manual administration while making more informed decisions about its fleet.
