King Township

Empowering drivers to take ownership of safety and improving fleet performance with telematics

King Township operates more than 130 vehicles and 200 additional assets across its municipal operations in York Region, Ontario. With vehicles representing the municipality throughout residential streets and school zones, maintaining safe driving practices and strong fleet accountability is especially important. By combining telematics data with driver-focused safety and engagement tools, King Township created a stronger feedback loop for its drivers while achieving measurable improvements in speeding, collision risk, fuel efficiency, and driver retention.

The Challenge: Improving Driver Safety Across a Public Fleet

For King Township, speeding was a major area of concern. Municipal vehicles travel through residential neighbourhoods and school zones every day, meaning unsafe driving behaviour can create both operational and public accountability concerns.

Although the Township already had access to telematics data and had established strong fleet safety practices, there was a gap between collecting vehicle data and helping individual drivers understand their own performance.

Because vehicles are shared across different departments, the same vehicle may be operated by multiple employees. Vehicle-level data could show how a truck was being driven, but it did not provide drivers with a clear, ongoing view of their own performance.

Driver feedback was also largely limited to periodic reviews. Between those conversations, drivers had little opportunity to recognize their own progress, identify areas for improvement, or receive positive reinforcement for safe driving.

The Solution: Turning Telematics Data Into Actionable Driver Feedback

King Township introduced a driver-focused safety and engagement program that built on the telematics data already being collected from its fleet.

The program gave drivers regular visibility into key driving behaviours, including speeding, braking, acceleration, and cornering. Performance information was made available directly to drivers, creating a continuous feedback loop rather than relying solely on occasional management reviews.

The approach was designed around positive reinforcement and driver ownership. Instead of using telematics strictly as a monitoring tool, the Township gave employees the information they needed to evaluate and improve their own driving habits.

King Township initially introduced the program to a pilot group of 21 drivers across different divisions. Drivers were able to see their individual performance and receive recognition for improvements, helping shift the conversation from correction to continuous improvement.

This also gave management a more practical way to reinforce safe behaviour. Rather than only addressing problems after they occurred, fleet leadership could use objective data to recognize positive performance and encourage drivers to maintain it.

The Results: Measurable Improvements in Safety and Fleet Efficiency

The three-month pilot produced measurable improvements across several areas of fleet performance.

King Township achieved a 10.9% improvement in speeding within the first 30 days, directly addressing one of its primary safety objectives. The fleet also recorded a 7% reduction in predictive collision risk and a 6.4% improvement in fuel efficiency.

Driver retention improved by 5%, providing an additional benefit for a lean municipal fleet managing more than $37 million in vehicles and assets.

Based on the pilot results, the Township calculated a projected 349% return on investment, representing $37,735 in net annualized savings based on the three-month pilot data.

Perhaps most importantly, the program helped change the relationship between management and drivers. Employees gained greater visibility into their own performance and were encouraged to take responsibility for improving their driving habits.

For King Township, telematics became more than a way to collect fleet data. It became a foundation for building stronger driver engagement, improving safety, reducing operating costs, and creating a culture of continuous improvement across the municipal fleet.
