The Musket Transport Ltd.
Strengthening hours-of-service compliance and driver safety with telematics
The Musket Transport Ltd. is an Ontario-based transportation company providing intermodal, dry van, and refrigerated trailer services between Canadian and U.S. ports and railways. Operating approximately 327 heavy-duty trucks, the company needed to prepare for Canada’s electronic logging requirements while reducing the administrative burden associated with paper logs. By introducing electronic logging and using telematics data to monitor driver behaviour, Musket improved hours-of-service compliance while creating a stronger foundation for driver safety.

The Challenge: Replacing Time-Consuming Paper Logs
Before transitioning to electronic logging, Musket relied heavily on paper records to track drivers’ hours of service. With hundreds of heavy-duty trucks operating across Canada and the United States, maintaining and reviewing these logs was difficult and time-consuming.
The approaching Canadian electronic logging mandate added another reason to modernize the process. Musket needed a way to manage hours-of-service requirements more efficiently while preparing its drivers and operations for the regulatory change.
At the same time, the company saw an opportunity to use the information collected from its vehicles for more than compliance. Understanding driver behaviour could help Musket identify unsafe habits and provide drivers with clearer feedback on their performance.
The Solution: Combining Electronic Logs With Driver Performance Data
Musket introduced electronic logging and vehicle tracking to replace manual hours-of-service processes and provide managers with more immediate information.
Hours-of-service alerts helped management identify potential compliance issues, while vehicle tracking provided additional context around driver and vehicle activity. According to Musket’s Health and Safety Manager, these tools made the company more efficient and compliant.
The company also introduced driver performance scorecards to monitor behaviours such as speeding, harsh braking, and harsh cornering. Rather than relying solely on individual observations, managers could use recorded driving events to support coaching conversations and track whether behaviour improved over time.
Musket also began exploring ways to use telematics information beyond safety and compliance. Vehicle mileage data was incorporated into maintenance tracking, while an internal program was developed to use vehicle information to track wheel-retorquing requirements.
The Results: Improved Compliance and Safer Driving Behaviour
The move to electronic logging improved Musket’s ability to manage hours-of-service requirements while reducing the time associated with paper-based record keeping. HOS alerts and vehicle tracking gave managers a more efficient way to identify and address compliance issues.
Driver scorecards also produced measurable behavioural improvements. Musket reported that drivers who received feedback on speeding, harsh braking, and cornering were able to improve those behaviours in subsequent reports.
The value of the data extended into fleet maintenance as well. Using vehicle mileage information for maintenance tracking reduced reliance on manual entries and created opportunities to build additional internal processes around the information generated by the fleet.
For The Musket Transport Ltd., GPS tracking and telematics helped turn a regulatory requirement into an opportunity to improve more than electronic logging. By combining compliance monitoring with driver coaching and vehicle information, the company strengthened its safety practices while making fleet administration more efficient.
