How To: Change the Oyster Batteries

If you need to change the Oyster batteries, you only need one tool: a screw driver. The concept in the video below for how to change the Oyster batteries is the same for each of the Oyster, Oyster2 and Oyster3 devices. Please ensure you are only replacing batteries with AA Energizer Lithium batteries.

The device must be sealed carefully to achieve the IP-67 rating.

1. First remove the 6 screws holding the casing together and place these in a safe spot.
2. Check that the clear silicon seal is in good condition and is not damaged, kinked, or dirty.
3. Remove the old batteries and replace with 3 new AA Energizer Lithium batteries. The device should start to blink and you should see it update on your platform within a few minutes.
4. Once you confirm that the unit has updated on your platform you can close the housing, and gently squeeze it shut. The foam inside the lid press against the batteries to help hold them in place.
5. Tighten the 6 screws to a uniform tightness. We recommend starting with screws which are opposite each other in order to help prevent against cracking from uneven pressure. The screws may be quite stiff during the first couple of assemblies.

The silicone seal is what is responsible for maintaining the integrity of the housing. So when sealing, we are looking for: Even pressure along all points of the seal AND a uniform gap between the housing lid and base (approx 1mm).

Magnetic Enclosure

If you purchased your Oyster3 with one of our weatherproof magnetic enclosures, you will need to open this up first in order to get to your Oyster device.

You do not need to remove the locking nuts attached to the rare earth magnets. You only need to remove the 4 small screws on the corners of the enclosure to access your Oyster device inside.
