Frontier Technologies is a Maritime-owned and operated company based in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, providing support and technical expertise to Canadian telecommunications and security companies. Its fleet includes approximately 90 cargo vans, with vehicles distributed across Canada from Vancouver to Newfoundland. As the company looked for ways to improve efficiency, safety, and profitability, it focused on making better use of fleet data to monitor maintenance, fuel consumption, driver behaviour, and vehicle activity.

The Challenge: Making Better Use of Fleet Data

Frontier Technologies wanted to get more value from its fleet data and use it to support day-to-day decisions around efficiency, safety, and profitability.

With most of its approximately 90 cargo vans dating from 2014 and 2015, accurate information about fuel costs and maintenance needs was important for keeping vehicles operational. The company also wanted better visibility into driver behaviour, including seatbelt use, speeding, idling, harsh cornering, and braking.

Because the vehicles were spread across the country, Frontier Technologies also needed a practical way for its two fleet managers to monitor operations and identify issues across the entire fleet.

The Solution: Centralizing Fleet Reporting and Driver Data

Frontier Technologies consolidated its fleet reporting to create a clearer, more consistent view of vehicle and driver activity.

The company used reports covering speeding and harsh cornering, vehicle locations and no-go zones, first and last trips, idling, and time spent at the warehouse compared with productive time. This gave managers more detailed information for making operational and business decisions.

Driver behaviour information also became easier to act on. A consolidated speeding report showed which drivers were speeding and when the event occurred, allowing managers to identify specific issues and hold drivers accountable.

Location data provided another important safety benefit. With visibility into where vehicles were operating, Frontier Technologies could determine the location of a collision within a few feet, helping provide more precise information when incidents occurred.

The reporting also helped the company manage its widely distributed fleet more efficiently, giving its two fleet managers a practical way to oversee vehicles operating from Vancouver to Newfoundland.

The Results: Lower Maintenance Costs and Safer Driving

The improved use of fleet data produced measurable results across safety, sustainability, and maintenance.

Frontier Technologies reduced speeding events from 150 to 50 events per month per technician. The company also reported improved driver safety scores and fewer tickets.

The company also reduced its carbon footprint, with CO2 emissions decreasing by 8%.

Maintenance costs moved in the opposite direction from what might be expected with an aging fleet. Average maintenance costs fell from $995 per vehicle in 2017 to $667 per vehicle, a reduction of over $325 per vehicle and an overall savings of $14,000. According to the case study, the savings freed up money for other priorities.

Better fleet data also helped make employee compensation more accurate. Because technician bonuses were influenced by factors such as driving behaviour, timeliness, and time spent on the job, more precise operational information gave employees greater confidence that their bonuses were being calculated correctly.

For Frontier Technologies, GPS tracking and telematics became a practical way to turn day-to-day fleet data into actionable information. By improving visibility into vehicle activity, driver behaviour, maintenance, and productivity, the company was able to reduce costs while strengthening safety and operational accountability.
